For many parents in Singapore, vaccination schedules are a familiar and essential part of life. Following the National Childhood Immunisation Programme (NCIP) is a must to keep children protected and ensure they can be admitted into school and kindergarten.
The COVID-19 pandemic then put vaccines at the front and centre of adult health, but the need for protection through vaccination is a lifelong reality that extends beyond flu or COVID-19 jabs. With two new vaccines — for shingles and pneumococcal disease — added to the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS), this is a timely reminder that a vaccination schedule for adults is just as crucial.
Shingles: Much Worse Than a Rash
Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Even decades after one has recovered from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate later in life as shingles. The characteristic rash and painful blisters can be excruciating, but the real concern is a potential complication called post-herpetic neuralgia, which can cause severe nerve pain for months or even years.
The new vaccine, Shingrix, is a highly effective way to prevent this. It is now recommended for:
- All adults aged 60 and above.
- Immunocompromised adults aged 18 to 59.
Pneumococcal Vaccine
Pneumococcal disease is a group of serious infections that can start as a bad cold or flu and quickly escalate to life-threatening conditions like pneumonia, meningitis, and septicaemia. It’s a serious but preventable threat.
The new PCV20 (Prevenar 20) Pfizer vaccine has been added to the NAIS because it offers broader protection than previous vaccines, covering more strains of the bacteria. It is now recommended for:
- Adults aged 65 and above.
- Adults aged 18 to 64 with specific chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or chronic lung or kidney disease.
Making It Accessible: Subsidies & MediSave
A crucial part of this NAIS update is its accessibility. Both Shingrix and PCV20 will be subsidised for eligible Singaporeans. From mid-2026, MediSave can also be used to help pay for the post-subsidy cost, making it easier than ever to get protected.
Proactive immunisation isn’t just for kids. It’s a vital part of adult health, empowering you to stay ahead of preventable diseases and enjoy greater peace of mind.
