Exploring Attitudes around Birth Control in Singapore
We surveyed over 300 women, between the ages of 18 – 50, to learn more about their attitudes around birth control and contraceptives in Singapore. These findings will support our efforts in improving access to reliable birth control for all.
Key Finding #1
Younger women are more likely to talk about their birth control options with their partners
Key Finding #2
A quarter of women have used a form of birth control in the past year
Less than 25% of women surveyed used monthly birth control pills.
Of the women who use emergency pills, 60% are aged between 18 – 30.
Key Finding #3
Brand matters when it comes to contraceptive pills
It’s important that pills have a market history of safety and effectiveness.
Women are willing to spend more on a pill that they trust, which typically are original brand pills compared to generic pills.
Key Finding #4
Women noticed new side effects when swapping from a branded pill to a generic pill
These side effects included spotting, bloating, and mood changes.
Key Finding #5
Worries around side effects are the main reason for choosing not to use birth control
More than half of the women surveyed shared that side effects were their greatest consideration.
Women who are on birth control shared that their doctors would typically share the possible side effects during their consultations.
Key Finding #6
The impact of birth control on one’s menstrual health, amongst other side effects, was the top concern for women
When making a decision, women also took into consideration the effectiveness of the birth control method, as well as whether they were hormonal-type of contraceptives.

Doctors are still the most trusted source of information on birth control
Women were also comfortable with seeking out content on birth control online, from trusted websites.
