Holiday season is coming (or already here), and it’s no doubt a time for fun, relaxation and sumptuous eating. But don’t let the festivities get in the way of your health - you wouldn’t want to end your holiday season with an unplanned visit to the doctor!

Here are 7 habits to steer clear from during your holiday, so that you can start next year on a healthy note.

1. Eating when you’re not hungry

Leisure time doesn’t mean snack time, so try to get your mind off food by exercising or going out with your friends! If you’re feeling bored and peckish, reach out for some carrot sticks instead of indulging in junk food and chocolates. More inspirations for mid-day snacks right here.

2. Sunbathing without sunscreen

You may think a bronzed and sun-kissed look is beautiful, but don’t wait till sun spots, wrinkles and other rough patches appear before you start thinking about your skin’s health. Protect your skin from sun damage by slapping on sunscreen whenever you go out.

3. Forgetting to brush your teeth

Since our childhood days, we were taught to brush our teeth and floss regularly. We may not be kids anymore, but that lesson still applies. Making dental hygiene a strict daily routine can go a long way in preventing gum disease and mouth-related conditions.

4. Being a couch potato

Relaxing on the couch with your favourite Netflix show isn’t bad for your body and mind, but spending the entire day doing so is. If you need some rest in the day, limit it to a few hours and spend the rest of your time exercising or socialising outside. This way, you’ll get to burn more calories and improve your mental wellness too.

5. Not removing your make-up before you sleep

It’s tempting to sleep with a face full of make-up after a long night out. But the worst thing you can do for your skin is to leave it exposed to oils and bacteria that can clog pores and cause irritation. Remember to wash and cleanse your face every night, even if you don’t wear make-up.

6. Brooding about the past

Having too much spare time may cause some to brood about the past, while others overload themselves with activities to bury these thoughts. Neither of these are healthy for your mind. Try to find a way to think positively and focus on your future instead of dwelling in your past regrets.

7. Having unprotected sex

Whether you’re in a serious or casual relationship, always practice safe sex. You don’t want to be bogged down by the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections or an unplanned pregnancy during your holiday. Put yourself first by protecting your sexual health.
